But when an application needs genuine high-current power delivery — 40 amps and up, through a single circular connector — none of those three is the right tool. MIL-DTL-22992 — best known by its heavy-duty designation QWLD and the Amphenol Class L series — delivers 40 A to 200 A per connector at up to 600 V, with conductors from 6 AWG to 4/0. It is the connector behind aircraft ground power carts, ship-to-shore power feeds, battlefield generator sets, and armored-vehicle power distribution. Standardized in 1975 and still actively maintained (Revision H, Amendment 4, published April 2024), it remains the workhorse of military and industrial high-power interconnects. The key procurement insight: commercial MIL-DTL-22992 connectors are physically interchangeable with the Class L military version but are tested to lower standards. Note the scale difference from signal connectors: the smallest Class L contact (#6, 40 A) carries roughly three times the current of the largest common MIL-DTL-38999 power contact (size 8, ~23–46 A depending on derating). The largest (#4/0, 200 A) has no 38999 or 26482 equivalent at all — this is pure power-distribution territory.

At 200 A, a 22 mV drop represents only 4.4 W of connector heating — impressive for a separable interface carrying that much current. Dielectric withstanding voltage (DWV) is tested per MIL-STD-1344 Method 3001, with acceptance criteria defined in the specification. Always request the DWV and insulation-resistance test report when qualifying a new supplier — power connectors that pass salt spray but fail DWV are a hidden field-failure risk.
MIL-DTL-22992's most important safety feature is power-keying. Because a connector's shell size encodes its current rating, the spec mandates keying by voltage, frequency, phase, and grounding configuration. A 115 VAC single-phase feed physically cannot mate with a 400 Hz three-phase feed or a 28 VDC feed of the same current rating.
Class L connectors are built for exposure. Typical construction is an aluminum alloy shell with heavy cadmium or nickel plating, high-strength contact retention, and an environmental seal rated to IP67. The operating temperature range is -55°C to +125°C, and the threaded coupling provides continuous metal-to-metal contact for a low-impedance shield and ground path.
